Damascus Lunch: November Report

On Saturday, 5th November 2011, the Damascus team gathered together to invite members of the public to come to the Cathedral for a fun and free lunch, to which about fifteen guests obliged. We enjoyed a delicious lunch of Subway rolls and wraps, rounded off with a tasty cake for dessert.

Gabs and his friend Luke entertained the audience with some of their tunes. Daniel presented the gospel from the passage about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. A changing passage for all to stomach, Daniel expertly expounded the text, demonstrating the proud nature of our hearts and the loving and merciful nature of God.

A big thank you to all the team who came together to serve on the day. If you are interested in attending, or even serving at a Damascus lunch, please email me at damascus12@hotmail.com. Our next lunch will be on Saturday, 3rd December, in the Upper Chapter House, St Andrews Cathedral or in the Sydney Square next to the Cathedral. We will be serving Subway once again, so we hope you to see you there.

Damascus Lunch: October Report

On Saturday, 1st October 2011, the Damascus team gathered together to invite members of the public to come to the Cathedral for a fun and free lunch, to which about fifteen guests obliged. We enjoyed a delicious lunch of pizza, rounded off with a tasty cake for dessert.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit and awed by the knowledge of pointing people to the great and glorious God, the Damascus inviters took to the streets of Sydney inviting all to come and enjoy some lunch and conversation. This can be a daunting and tyring task, but it is a task which is very fruitful for both the people of Sydney, who witness the glorious power of God and for the inviter, who places their trust solely in the sovereignty of God to bring people to the event. If you are keen to engage in street evangelism, I encourage you to come along and serve at our next Damascus event by inviting the public to enjoy our service.

In the Upper Chapter House, there was a jovial feeling in the air. Viken, the guitar virtuoso, entertained all with a bright array of uplifting songs. The pizza was served and the friendly banter grew.

This is sin - giving Jesus the bird!
At the conclusion of lunch, Rhys presented the gospel to the audience, from the passage in Luke 5:17-26, which is about the paralytic man who was healed by Jesus after being lowered through the roof by his friends. Rhys called all to consider their greatest need, running through a range of possibilities, then clarifying what the bible means by ‘sin’, drawing to the conclusion in the salvation through God incarnate, Jesus Christ. I have written more on the topic of our greatest need and I would like to offer both articles for your enjoyment:
  1. Life(9): Mountains, glory and mirrors
  2. Stuff! Are you all about it?

A big thank you to all the team who came together to serve on the day. If you are interested in attending, or even serving at a Damascus lunch, please email me at damascus12@hotmail.com. Our next lunch will be on Saturday, 5th November, venue to be advised shortly (either in the Upper Chapter House, St Andrews Cathedral or in the Sydney Square next to the Cathedral).

Damascus Lunch: September Report

On Saturday, 3rd September 2011, the Damascus team gathered together to invite people who ventured out for a day of fun in Sydney. About twenty guests graced the Upper Chapter House of St Andrew’s Cathedral. We enjoyed a sumptuous lunch of chicken and salad, rounded off with a tasty cake for dessert. A big thank you to Cristina and Ben for setting up the hall in such an attractive way, and to Deb and Willem for organising the delicious lunch.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Damascus inviters took to the streets of Sydney inviting all to come and enjoy some lunch and conversation. As people arrived, Viken, the guitar virtuoso, entertained all with a bright array of songs. Lunch was served as the friendly banter grew.

At the conclusion of lunch, Ben presented the gospel ever so clearly. He challenged all, Christian and non, to consider their lives and hand over control to the sovereign God of the universe. He demonstrated how poorly our lives have been governed in light of a Holy and righteous God, and he identified our greatest need – to trust and love Jesus Christ!

A big thank you to all the team who came together to serve on the day. If you are interested in attending, or even serving at a Damascus lunch, please email me at damascus12@hotmail.com. Our next lunch will be on Saturday, 1st October, in the Upper Chapter House.

Damascus Lunch: August Report

Have you ever arrived at a beach after a huge drive, only to find the beach is closed? Did you dare to take the plunge in the surging surf? A few of my mates and I did just this and found ourselves caught in a rip, fighting for our lives.

On Saturday, 6th August 2011, over thirty guests packed into St Andrews Cathedral Upper Chapter House to witness Shernice, a budding and up and coming musician, work her craft. We were treated to a plate of pasta and bread sticks for lunch. Everybody enjoyed the music and the friendly conversation that was on offer.

As the lunch moved on, Rhys gave a talk, which focussed on the question of why is there suffering and hardships in our world. Through the exposition of the parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:1-7), Rhys explained how we were all created by an all powerful God, who we have fallen out of relationship with and who is searching and seeking to rescue us from implications of our rebellion.

Rhys used the analogy of a closed beach to help us understand this text better. He reminisced of a time when he and a few friends travelled two hours to a beach to find it riddled with ‘Beach Closed’ signs and a huge surf. With disregard to the council’s decision to close the beach, the boys took the plunge anyway only to find themselves caught in a strong rip. Over powered and fatiguing rapidly, their only hope was for someone to notice them and provide the most needed rescue.

This universe, and the life within it, was created by God. Humans were created for relationship with him and to guard and rule the world in his image. We rejected this relationship and mandate, which plumped all life on earth into turmoil and despair. Our only hope is for God to ultimately step in and fix the mess we have created; the rip for which we are all caught in. God, taking on the form of a human, lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died to rescue us from our rejection and rebellion. Like Rhys and his mates, our only hope is for God to rescue us from our rejection. Jesus is our life saver, our rescuer! Our only hope is in Jesus.

A big thank you to all the team who came together to serve. If you are interested in attending, or even serving at a Damascus lunch, please email me at damascus12@hotmail.com. Our next lunch will be on Saturday, 3rd September, in the Upper Chapter House.
